The ATLD Insight

Saltwater vs. Magnesium Mineral Pools

Both systems are far gentler on the skin than traditional chlorine. Understanding how each one enhances your swimming experience is the key to choosing the right fit for your lifestyle.

Maintaining a balanced, healthy pool is essential, and at ATLD we frequently guide our clients through the choice between saltwater and magnesium mineral systems. While both are significantly gentler on the skin than traditional chlorine, understanding how they enhance your swimming experience is key to making the right choice for your lifestyle.

At their core, both systems are effective sanitisers. They use a salt chlorinator to convert dissolved minerals into chlorine to keep your water pristine. While the maintenance routines are remarkably similar, the distinction lies in the water quality and the physiological benefits each one offers.

Saltwater Pools

Saltwater pools rely on sodium chloride to produce chlorine. It is a common misconception that these pools mimic the ocean; in reality, the salt concentration in a pool (2,500–8,000 ppm) is far lower than the ocean (35,000 ppm). Consequently, there is no salty residue or taste — just clean, comfortable water.

The ATLD advantage

  • Gentle experience: Significantly softer on the eyes and skin than traditional chlorine.
  • Versatility: Compatible with a wide range of pool surfaces and designs.
  • Accessibility: Salt is a cost-effective, readily available solution, making maintenance straightforward.
  • Investment: Pool salt is an economical choice, generally retailing around $10 for a 20kg bag, with most pools requiring 1–2 bags per month.

Magnesium Mineral Pools

Magnesium mineral systems blend magnesium chloride, potassium chloride and sodium chloride. This combination does not just sanitise; it transforms the water, providing a noticeably “softer” feel that elevates your swimming experience. Importantly, because these minerals work with standard salt chlorinators, you can enjoy these benefits without needing to replace your existing equipment.

The ATLD advantage

  • Premium water quality: Provides a silky, therapeutic feel that is exceptionally soothing for sensitive skin.
  • Wellness benefits: Known for moisturising properties that are gentle on both skin and hair.
  • Non-corrosive: A superior choice for protecting your pool's equipment and surrounds.
  • Family-focused: An ideal, gentle solution for children and infants.
  • Investment: While magnesium minerals are a premium compared to traditional salt — retailing at approximately $35 for a 10kg bag — many of our clients find the heightened comfort and wellness benefits well worth it. Typically, a pool will require 2–4 bags per month.

Choosing your path

Whether you prioritise the cost-effectiveness and reliability of a saltwater system or the therapeutic, skin-soothing indulgence of magnesium minerals, both provide a safe, healthy and high-quality environment for your family.

At ATLD, we believe your pool should be an extension of your lifestyle. If you would like a personalised recommendation on which system best suits your specific pool setup, we are here to help.
